“Crónica L” reviewed by Loop
This is compilation celebrates the 50th release on this Porto based Portuguese label run by Miguel Carvalhais and Pedro Tudela who invited 18 artists of the Crónica roster and proposed them to collaborate between them producing nine tracks.
The first track is by Italian Enrico Coniglio and UK’s sound artist Janek Shaefer which is a drone piece alongwith percussion of found objects.
French artist Gilles Aubry and Portuguese Paul Raposo explore abstract sonorities closed to noise; while German Marc Behrens and Cem Güney push the boundaries of electroacoustic sounds. Portuguese @c + Gintas K produce sharp tones quite obscure.
Austrian Peter Votava aka Pure and Portuguese Durán Vásquez on “STRONRM” work with micro sounds almost close to silence but suddenly move to noise. Stephan Mathieu y Piotr Kurek show up a drone piece texturized with field recordings.
Israel’s audio visual artist Ran Slavin + Portuguese Vitor Joaquim on “Voices Over Water” used chants recordings and as a backdrop is a kind of percussion in the likes of Muslimgauze.
Australia’s Brisbane based artist and boss of the Room40 label, Lawrence English and Stephan Vitiello deliver twinkling tones, moog sounds that come together with recordings of birds songs, seagulls…
Closing the comp Portuguese The Beautiful Schizophonic and TU M’ produces a gorgeous ambient piece.
Undoubtedly this disc marks the efforts of a good job in order to show quality avant music.
